Shodo & Sumi-e Winter Brushstrokes

Pause, Breath, and paint the Winter
by Soonhwa Kang

Soonhwa will offer a special workshop that brings together Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) and Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) — two deeply connected art forms rooted in mindfulness, rhythm, and flow.

This session welcomes both new participants and those who have joined my previous Sumi-e workshops. This time, we will explore winter-related characters and motifs, letting the quiet atmosphere of the season guide our brushwork and imagination.

To keep the atmosphere calm and personal, the class is intentionally small — limited to 2 to 4 participants.

We will move slowly through breathing, brush techniques, and the philosophy behind each stroke, while also reflecting on how Sumi-e and Shodo differ from the Western painting traditions familiar in the Netherlands.
