Sumi-e workshop
What is Sumi-e?
Sumi-e is a traditional East Asian ink wash painting that originated in China and later spread to Korea and Japan. The term "Sumi-e" comes from Japanese, where "Sumi" means black ink, and "E" means painting. This art form uses black ink applied with a brush on Washi paper or silk, focusing on capturing the spirit or essence of the subject rather than detailed realism.
Characterized by deliberate brushstrokes and varying ink tones, Sumi-e emphasizes simplicity and spontaneity, reflecting its roots in Zen philosophy. This meditative approach allows artists to convey depth, movement, and emotion, making Sumi-e a profound and expressive art form.
Workshop Focus
In this workshop, Soonhwa aims not only to share the techniques of Sumi-e but also to integrate breathing exercises with brushstroke movements and to explore the philosophy behind traditional East Asian painting. By the end of this workshop, you will not only learn how to paint a bamboo tree but also how to connect with yourself and the natural world. This workshop is open to both experienced painters and beginners who have never picked up a brush before.

” It was a special experience for me. When you took my hand and we painted together, I felt how much tension there was in my body. I am longing to use the attitude you showed us in Sumi-e schilderen. And I am grateful! Thank you so much for your warmth, kindness and your expertise! ”
