Coming in 2026:
Two New Ink Courses
by Soonhwa Kang

In early 2026, Soonhwa Kang will open two new ink-based courses at her studio in Haarlem.

These programs grow from her long-standing practice in painting across diverse mediums and her deep engagement with East Asian painting philosophy and methods. They offer a slower, more expansive learning journey—opening space for students to explore, deepen their practice, and develop their own artistic voice.

Each course will run 8-10 sessions, meeting twice per month.
Further details—including exact starting dates, times, and course fees—will be announced soon.

1. Deep Dive into Sumi-e: Tradition, Presence, Practice

A long-form course dedicated to the foundations of East Asian ink painting.
We will study traditional subjects — plants, birds, trees, landscapes — along with brush techniques, rhythm, and the meditative quality of Sumi-e.
There will also be moments where we translate ink brushstrokes into clay work, exploring how gesture and material inform each other.

This course is for those who wish to deepen their practice, understand the lineage of the art form, and cultivate presence through repetition and refinement.

No previous experience needed — only openness to observe, breathe, and create.

2. Ink as Play, Ink as Expression

A contemporary ink course for artists and explorers.
Ink becomes a material to push, stretch, and reinvent.
We will experiment with tools, textures, large brushes, water, and unconventional materials — finding new ways to express movement and emotion.
The course will also look at contemporary artists who use ink, offering inspiration and context for your own experimentation.
Some sessions may link ink gestures with clay, translating expressive marks into three-dimensional form.

This course is for those who want to break habits, discover new languages with ink, and use the material as a partner in creative research.

Guest Artist Workshops
at Hanato Atelier
— Coming in 2026

In addition to the regular ink courses, Hanato Atelier will host a new series of guest artist workshops in 2026.
We are currently in the brainstorming phase, shaping a program that brings together makers, traditions, and materials.

Starting in early January, we will announce workshops that focus on:

  • natural materials

  • cultural heritage

  • hand-based practices and craftsmanship

  • slow, thoughtful making

Each invited artist will share their own way of working — offering participants a chance to explore new techniques, connect with materials, and learn through the hands.

More information will be shared in January.
