Hanato Atelier opens in Haarlem
Dear Sumi-e and Hanato friends,
I would like to share something new and close to my heart: Hanato Atelier, now open at my new studio in Haarlem.
Hanato Atelier is a place to draw inspiration from nature and cultural heritage — a circle where hands move, stories unfold, and quiet, creative practices come to life.
Through workshops in heritage crafts and contemplative arts — from ikebana to weaving, ink painting to bookbinding, and drawing on ceramics — we come together to explore how creativity connects us: to ourselves, to each other, and to the traditions we carry.
Before the summer break, I’m excited to host two special workshops: Ukrainian paper cutting and Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement)!
First, I’m delighted to introduce Vita Khaidurova, who will lead the Ukrainian paper cutting workshop. Vita studied illustration in Ukraine and has worked for many years as a children’s book illustrator. I met her at a ceramics studio, and it was immediately clear that her craftsmanship is truly special. Whether she’s carving clay or cutting paper, Vita brings deep artistic sensitivity and refined skills to everything she touches.
In this workshop, she’ll introduce the traditional Ukrainian art of Vytynanka (paper cutting). The theme will be Family Tree — a chance to reflect on family connections, especially meaningful in these complex times. Vita’s beautiful ceramic pieces will also be on display and available for purchase in a small corner next to the workshop space. We warmly welcome your participation — it would be lovely to see you there!
