Suminahashi
Suminagashi, a over a thousand years old marbling technique invites you to slow down and engage with the natural rhythm of water and your breath. Using just sumi ink, water, and paper, you’ll learn to create fluid, one-of-a-kind patterns that reflect both chance and intention. Chika will share her approach to this poetic art form, rooted in her printmaking background and deep respect for materials. This workshop is suitable for all levels and welcomes anyone interested in slow, meaningful making.
Watoji
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to fold, prepare, and stitch your own Japanese-style book using traditional tools and techniques. The binding method we’ll use is both simple and durable, with beautiful exposed stitching that reflects the Japanese aesthetic. No glue, no binding frame, just paper, thread, and your hands. You’ll go home with four hand-bound books you’ve made yourself. This workshop is suitable for all levels and welcomes anyone interested in slow, meaningful making.
Chika Ito is a Japanese artist based in the Netherlands whose work bridges printmaking, papermaking, bookbinding, and sustainable material research. Trained in the U.S. and active internationally, she has over 30 years of experience creating her own inks, papers, and prints using natural and locally sourced materials. Her workshops draw from traditional Japanese techniques and philosophies while inviting contemporary, ecological perspectives. Chika’s approach is rooted in handwork, cultural dialogue, and a deep engagement with nature.
